Moving: It’s An Adventure (Part 5)

It has been well over a month since my last update, and Moving Day is only 12 days away.  I am both excited and extremely anxious & sad about it.

What a whirlwind this past month has been.  Among the things that have happened in the last 30 days or so:

I’ve had the student art showcase at school, some doctor’s appointments, got my hair done, celebrated my 10th Second Life anniversary (aka my Rez Day), spent time cat-sitting, went to a couple of local theatre productions, had my graduation ceremony, (finally) had a (pretty successful) yard sale, went to a going-away party hosted for me by some dear friends, spent bonding time with my family, discovered that one of our outdoor/stray cats had died unexpectedly…  In between I’ve been packing like crazy, selling things on Ebay & local town classifieds.  Trying to sell the big items, my car & my exercise bike, sometime this week.  All the while, the process has become more complicated due to major road construction on my street.  Great timing.

Construction

This week is crunch time.  I have to actually finish packing, for real.  I’ve been putting the rest of it off, because I am still somewhat in denial about the idea that I will never live in this house again in less than two weeks.  All of the things that make my room look like my room (the things hanging on the walls, etc) will have to come down.  It’s a weird feeling.  I’m excited for the adventures ahead of me, but also very traumatized about leaving behind my loved ones who live here on the east coast.

More updates soon, hopefully!

What A Weird Week It’s Been – But, Hey, I’ve Finally Woken Up From Cyberspace Cryosleep!

It has been a crazy week full of ups & downs, but my big news is that I was FINALLY able to purchase a (refurbished) laptop, which means I can finally devote more time to getting down with some art that requires some heavy-duty computer processing power.

Except that I don’t have a lot of time at the moment — my big move to the west coast is only about 5 weeks away.  Between now and then, I still have a TON of stuff to do.

First & Recent – Blog Challenge

Around the Second Life blogosphere, there is a meme challenge going around, & sometimes I think those are fun to do, ANNNND I am an introspective person by nature, SO I thought I would participate.

The challenge:

Share a side by side comparison of your first blog picture beside a recent picture of your avatar. Don’t forget to share the link to your image in the comments and add your pictures to the Blog Memes flickr group.

I believe this meme idea was given to me by Ms. Trixie Cliassi last year. The idea was to share a comparison of your first blog post to your most recent or new one. I’ve just taken a new snapshot similar to the old one of what my avatar looks like today. She also asked us to share our thoughts on how we feel we’ve improved as photographers or bloggers.

For my version of this challenge, I will instead focus on my past decade as an artist working in the metaverse.

A Conversation Between the Artists On Opening Day in INTERMUNDIA

INTERMUNDIA’s first guest artist is Sowa Mai (RL artist Stephen Beveridge).  Today, as of 10 AM PST we are officially open.  As we arrived, we had the chance to chat & catch up before guests arrived. We’ve worked together before, but it has been many years since we’ve been able to do so, since I haven’t been able to log into Second Life much in the past two and a half years.  In this session, we chat about the nature of art in SL: inspiration, methods, and the recent art climate — including the newly-opened Museo del Metaverso. Later, we are briefly joined by Banrion Constantine, another Second Life artist with a lot of metaverse art under her belt. With permission, I am posting excerpts of our conversation here. (*edited for conciseness & clarity)

La Petite Mort – My Tribute to Fracture, an 8+ Year Gathering Place & Labor of Love in Second Life

Fracture, a Second Life club of sorts with a loyal, long-lasting following, was built about eight years ago by the inimitable music curator & DJ extraordinaire, Beta Bates.  It has weathered a lot of changes, but is still going strong.

Fracture’s tagline:

Fracture.  If you’re here you probably know the deal.  Awesome music.  Queer safe space.  All are welcome, but respect your sisters & brothers & others.

When I say “loyal,” I mean that a lot of its regulars have known each other & have been friends for years — many of whom have met each other in real life, and continued friendships and relationships in meatspace as well.

Hanging out with Beta

The Pink Lodge – My First Completed Artwork in 2015 is Now Open at ArtFest 4

My latest Second Life work, The Pink Lodge, was inspired by the work of David Lynch and my own recent visits to some of the iconic filming locations of the cult classic 90s TV series, Twin Peaks.

Twin Peaks day trip, Snoqualmie & North Bend, WA, 2015

I was invited to participate in ArtFest 4, an artist gathering that is open to all sorts of artistic content, from SL snapshots to music to performance art.  According to their event information, ArtFest “…is a CHARITY art competition to raise funds for disaster relief.  100% of the $L [Linden dollars] raised with ArtFest is converted to [real] money, and donated to the Red Cross/Crescent (Via their Everyday Heroes program).”

Catching Up — Apparently, I’ve Got a Lot of It To Do

So, I’m visiting my partner on the other side of the country and I’ve been here a month, and I still haven’t really updated much since I’ve been here.  It hasn’t been for a lack of things to blog about, more like.. I’ve had too much to do.  One of the things I’ve been most excited about my time here is my ability to pick up some art activities in Second Life after having been cut off from it for over two years.

SOOooooo, I am going to attempt to give the short version of my month here thus far, in pictures — real life & Second Life things — a lot of it art-related.

Dear readers,
Some of you may remember me as a veteran SL artist. I was a very active member of various SL art circles (ArthOle, Not Possible in Real Life, Brooklyn Is Watching, etc.) up until about two and a half years ago when my PC died. Since that time I have only been able to log in sporadically with an old laptop that can only run a text client of SL. However, I am staying with my RL/SL partner until late March of 2015 and I am able to use their laptop for SL on most days.

Thus, I am looking to get involved with some projects again. I have land available and am planning to create gallery/artspace with thought-provoking, groundbreaking, subversive installation and interactive art to exhibit not only my work, but that of other artists too. The total land space will offer about 1100 prims. Additionally, I will be running some fundraising events to help me raise the money for a new laptop. I recently completed my Associates degree in Fine Arts and want to continue to further my education, but need a powerful machine to help me do that.

Please contact me if you have any interest in collaborating! I miss building and making art here and am looking forward to getting into it again soon.
